The World’s Longest Yacht Race
10 months, 40,000 miles of ocean racing and 450 people facing the challenge of a lifetime. Heather Stephens, employee at AGCO Finance in the United States, has the great opportunity to participate in The Clipper Race! It is contested by ten stripped down 68-foot racing yachts all of them crewed by people like us. The yachts are also manned with 10 fully trained skippers, employed to lead the crews safely around the planet.
The race track is 40,000 miles long and will take eleven months to complete the circumnavigation.
The yacht and crew set sail on Saturday (14 April) 1400 local time, from the Jack London Squarein Oakland with many cheering them on in the warm spring sunshine, before heading out to San Francisco Bay for the start line escorted by US Coast Guard cutter Sockeye.
Leg 7 is divided into 2 races, totaling 5,500 miles. Race 10 takes our crew from California on the US West Coast to Panama Canal, where they will transit, before Race 11 begins onto New York.
“We were given a rousing send off from a large boat full of De Lage Landen members who came down to support us!” says skipper Stuart Jackson.
“After a great break ashore we are under way again heading down the west coast of the US to Panama. With the crew fully rested we enjoyed perfect conditions for the race start, so swiftly made our way out under the Golden Gate Bridge. Everyone has quickly adjusted back in to life at sea and the watch system. Thankfully the weather is looking like it may be kind to us for a few days as we are already enjoying a spinnaker run in around 20 knots of wind and enough swell to enjoy a little surfing.”
